Louis Jadot is a long-established wine house based in Beaune, in the heart of Burgundy. It is one of the region's most trusted names. The house is best known for its red and white Burgundies. It also makes wines further south, in Beaujolais. This bottle shows how well the house handles the lighter, fruit-driven style of that area. It is an easy pick for both new and seasoned wine drinkers.
Beaujolais sits in the southern part of Burgundy. Its wines are made from the Gamay grape, not the Pinot Noir used further north. Gamay gives Beaujolais its own bright, juicy identity. The Villages label means the grapes come from a step-up group of villages in the hilly north of the area. Louis Jadot Beaujolais Villages is made from 100% Gamay.
The vines grow on granite and sandy soils. Gamay makes a much better wine on this granite than on the limestone further north. The grapes are picked by hand in whole bunches. They then soak on their skins for a long time. This draws out color and soft tannins (the grippy feel in red wine). In the glass you get ripe red berries, cherry and raspberry. A hint of violet and a touch of black pepper add interest. The wine is light-bodied, crisp and juicy.
The finish is clean and fruity. Chill it slightly for 15 minutes or so before you pour. For pairing, the team at CWS suggests roast chicken or other white meats. It also goes well with charcuterie and mild cheeses such as Brie and Camembert.
