Originating from France in inspiration but produced in the United States within the Eola Amity Hills appellation of the Willamette Valley in Oregon, Lingua Franca 'The Plow' Pinot Noir 2023 represents an energetic, aromatic, and cellaring grade expression of New World Pinot Noir crafted in a classic European paradigm. Founded by Master Sommelier Larry Stone alongside legendary Burgundian consulting winemaker Dominique Lafon and winemaker Thomas Savre, Lingua Franca has established itself as one of Oregon's benchmark producers. Sourced exclusively from an east-facing block of the estate vineyard defined by volcanic Jory and Nekia soils over basalt bedrock, 'The Plow' derives its name from the horse-drawn plow used to cultivate this prized parcel. The winemaking philosophy combines organic and biodynamic viticulture, hand harvesting, partial whole-cluster native yeast fermentation, and aging in French oak barrels (approximately 20% to 25% new) to craft a wine marked by bright floral aromatics, spicy complexity, and remarkable tension.
Wine Description
The wine presents a brilliant, clear medium ruby red colour with soft magenta reflections along the rim. An expressive, highly perfumed bouquet opens with inviting aromas of Bing cherries, red cranberry, wild strawberry, and orange zest, interwoven with savory notes of Damascus rose, cardamom, black tea, flint, and subtle toasted French oak spice. On the palate, it is medium bodied, pure, and vibrant, delivering concentrated flavours of spicy red fruit, wild berries, and mineral iron, all supported by a bright, mouthwatering spine of natural acidity. Framed by fine-grained, chalky tannins and a juicy mid-palate structure, it concludes with a long, linear finish marked by lingering red fruit, savory spice, and a persistent volcanic mineral grip. Composed of 100% Pinot Noir, this 2023 release offers an optimal drinking window of 2026–2038. Stylistically, it effortlessly marries Willamette Valley fruit purity with European restraint, freshness, and structural precision.
