This wine starts with a simple idea. Nature rarely gives you a perfect year on its own. So instead of one harvest, Grand Siècle blends three great years. The goal is balance, depth and precision. You get freshness, structure and finesse in one glass.
This is Iteration No. 26 of this prestige blend, first made in 1959. The number tells you exactly which blend you're drinking. It joins three vintages. The 2012 leads the blend at 65%. The 2008 adds 25%, and the 2007 adds the last 10%. The older years bring maturity and complexity.
You'll taste a careful balance of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Chardonnay takes the lead at 58%, with 42% Pinot Noir. All the grapes come from top Grand Cru villages, such as Le Mesnil, Cramant, Avize and Bouzy. The wine then rests on its lees (the spent yeast) for ten years. This builds richness without losing energy.
On the nose, you'll find fresh ginger, toasted bread and pie crust. Take a sip and it feels bright and lively, with a silky mousse. A chalky, mineral finish keeps it clean. Serve it a little warmer than most Champagne so it can open up. It works beautifully with shellfish, caviar, truffles or roast poultry. Enjoy it now, or cellar it for a few more years.
