Laphroaig calls Select its most approachable whisky. It is an Islay single malt and a friendly way into the distillery's famous peat smoke. If you are curious about smoky Scotch whiskey, this is a good first step.
The blend draws on whisky from several cask types. You get Oloroso sherry butts, hogsheads seasoned with Pedro Ximénez sherry and first-fill ex-bourbon quarter casks. Ex-bourbon barrels play a part too. The whole blend then rests in new American oak before bottling.
Peat smoke rises out of the glass right away, with ripe red fruit close behind. The first sip is sweet. Then the smoke builds, with dashes of ash and seaweed. The finish is long. Floral notes linger alongside touches of marzipan and lime. Some tasters also find vanilla on the palate and a classic Islay hint of iodine.
Judges have rated it well. Select won Gold at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition in 2020 and 2022. It also took Gold Outstanding at the 2022 International Wine & Spirits Competition.
Drink it neat to taste the peat, fruit and oak in balance. A few drops of water bring out its softer side, and ice tames the smoke. Laphroaig also suggests a Smoked Whisky Sour. Smoked salmon, grilled meat or dark chocolate make good company. Then explore more peated whiskies.
