Introduction
Lagavulin 12 Year Old Special Release 2024 is a premium single malt Scotch whisky from the Isle of Islay, Scotland. Produced by the Lagavulin Distillery, which was officially founded in 1816 by John Johnston, the brand is currently owned by the multinational spirits company Diageo. This specific expression, titled 'Fireside Tales', is part of Diageo's annual Special Release collection, a series that showcases rare and experimental bottlings from their prestigious distillery portfolio.
Spirit Description
This limited edition is matured in a unique combination of first-fill ex-bourbon and refill casks, a deliberate choice intended to temper Lagavulin's legendary peat smoke with sweet, active oak influence.
Colour: The spirit displays a bright golden or shimmering gold hue.
Aroma: The nose is clean and ashy, featuring intense peat smoke and maritime brine mingled with bright yellow fruits like pineapple and mango, alongside hints of fresh vanilla and coconut.
Palate: It offers a punchy and bold palate where bonfire smoke and charred oak meet creamy yellow custard and toffee. Flavours of lemon zest, honey, and aromatic baking spices like cinnamon and clove are also present.
Body: The whisky is medium-bodied with a rich and opulent mouthfeel that balances its high strength with velvety sweetness.
Finish: The experience concludes with a long, warming finish of deeply ashy notes, iodine, and tobacco, offset by a persistent caramel sweetness.
