Kurayoshi 8 Year Old is a premium blended malt from the Matsui Shuzou distillery in the Tottori Prefecture. As part of the Kurayoshi "World Malt" series, this expression is a marriage of carefully selected malt whiskies from Scotland and Japan. The spirit is proofed using the famous spring water from Mount Daisen, which is naturally filtered through volcanic rock to provide a soft and pure character. This eight-year maturation represents the entry point into the aged core range, focusing on a balance between fresh cereal notes and the developing influence of white oak.
Whisky Description
This whisky presents a light amber-gold appearance. The nose is fresh and inviting, offering scents of sweet malted barley, dried orange peel, and a distinct floral honey note. On the palate, the body is smooth and mellow, delivering flavors of toasted nuts, vanilla, and a hint of white pepper. There is a delicate sweetness reminiscent of light caramel and orchard fruits like green apples. The finish is clean and medium in length, characterized by a refreshing citrus zest and a gentle, dry oakiness. It is bottled at 43% ABV (or 46% depending on the market) and is non-chill filtered to maintain its textural depth.
Food Pairing
The bright, malty, and slightly citrusy profile of the 8 Year Old makes it an excellent match for lighter savory dishes. It pairs particularly well with lemon-herb roasted chicken, grilled white fish, or vegetable tempura. For a snack pairing, try it with salted almonds or a mild white cheddar. If you are looking for a dessert match, it complements lemon tart or vanilla bean shortbread, which highlights the whisky's citrus and grain sweetness. Like many Matsui spirits, it also performs exceptionally well in a highball with a thin slice of ginger.
