Kavalan King Car 45th Anniversary Palo Cortado is produced in Taiwan, within the Yilan County region. Released in late 2024, this limited-edition single malt commemorates the 45th anniversary of Kavalan’s parent company, the King Car Group, founded in 1979. The whisky is aged in rare Palo Cortado sherry casks sourced from Spain's "Sherry Triangle" a style of sherry that accounts for less than 1% of global production and is prized for combining the aromatic finesse of Amontillado with the robust body of Oloroso.
Spirit Description
This high-strength expression is matured in Taiwan’s subtropical climate, which accelerates the interaction between the spirit and the rare wood. It presents a deep caramel mahogany colour and is bottled non-chill filtered with no added colour. The nose is rich and intricate, bursting with cocoa powder, zesty citrus peel, and sweet dried fruits, followed by notes of toffee, pastries, and cardamom. On the palate, it is full-bodied and velvety, offering layers of orange pound cake, vanilla fruitcake, and roasted nuts. The experience is punctuated by hints of toasted biscuit and raisins, leading to a long, polished finish characterized by caramel toffee and crushed walnuts. It is bottled at a powerful 54% ABV and typically presented in a 1.5L cello-shaped decanter topped with a Swarovski crystal.
