Jumbo Time Wines Group Hug 2022 is a sparkling apple-grape hybrid wine produced in California. Founded in 2020 by Omar Koukaz and Jonathan Yadegar, Jumbo Time Wines operates from Los Angeles and Sonoma, focusing on natural winemaking with sustainable practices and minimal cellar intervention. The project sources organically farmed, dry-farmed, and biodynamic fruit whenever possible.
Group Hug represents the winery's exploration of apple-grape pet nat wines, combining elements of both cider and wine production. The wine is made primarily from organic Gravenstein apples sourced from orchards around Sebastopol, California. The 2022 vintage incorporates Zinfandel grapes from Cox Ranch in Mendocino County. Approximately half of the blend was aged for one year in stainless steel drums before bottling, while the remaining portion consists of fresh juice. This technique adds complexity and depth to the final wine.
The wine undergoes spontaneous fermentation and is bottled while still fermenting, creating natural carbonation in the pétillant-naturel style. The production follows zero-intervention principles, with no added acidification agents, color enhancers, commercial yeasts, or filtration. Minimal sulfites are added if any. Group Hug displays high acidity with a bubbly, refreshing character. The wine offers crunch from the apples combined with round, plummy fruit notes and zipping texture. Tasting notes include tart strawberry, citrus rind, red fruit, and apple characteristics. The wine is designed for casual drinking and pairs well with a variety of foods. It serves as a versatile option for warm weather, aperitifs, or pre-dinner drinks. The playful, cartoon-style label reflects the winery's approachable philosophy toward natural wine, aiming to make wine accessible and fun rather than intimidating.
