Josh Reserve North Coast Cabernet Sauvignon is a step up from the classic Josh Cellars red. Joseph Carr started Josh Cellars in 2007. He named it after his father, Josh, as a tribute to him. In 2021, Wine Enthusiast named Josh Cellars its American Winery of the Year. This Reserve bottling shows what the team can do with fruit from some of California's most varied vineyard land.
The grapes come from across the North Coast AVA. That wide area takes in Sonoma, Lake and Mendocino counties. These counties have varied climates and soils. Each one adds its own layer to the final blend. The wine is aged in French oak barrels before bottling. The goal is a red that is full of fruit but stays balanced and easy to like.
Pour a glass and take a slow sniff. The nose opens with dark fruits and toasted nuts. Look closer and you may catch blackcurrant and a soft hint of rose petal. On your palate, rich dark cherries lead the way. Mocha and toasted hazelnuts follow close behind. A touch of vanilla rounds it off. The tannins are round and smooth, so it never feels harsh. The finish is long and keeps the fruit going.
This is a wine that loves food. Josh Cellars suggests braised short ribs, a well-seasoned steak or sautéed portobello mushrooms. Hard cheeses like aged cheddar or gouda are a great match too. You can also try it with prime rib, roast lamb or a mushroom risotto. For dessert, a square of dark chocolate brings out the mocha notes. It is a good bottle for a weekend barbecue or a cosy dinner at home.
To get the most from it, serve it slightly below room temperature, around 65°F. If you have time, decant it for about 30 minutes. That lets the fruit and nutty notes open up. It drinks well now. You can also lay it down for a few years if you like a softer, more mellow red. The store carries more than one vintage, so the taste can shift a little from year to year.
