Joseph Magnus Cigar Blend is a bourbon made for one job. It is meant to sit next to a good cigar. The idea came from master blender Nancy Fraley. She starts with Joseph Magnus Bourbon, a straight bourbon finished in casks that once held Armagnac, sherry and Cognac. She then adds 11- and 18-year-old whiskeys to build depth. The bourbon itself is sourced from Indiana.
Each release comes in small, numbered batches. Proof changes from batch to batch, but it is always bottled above 100 proof. The color is a deep mahogany that hints at all that cask time. Check the label on your bottle for its exact batch and strength.
Lift the glass and you get tobacco, leather and spice right away. Vanilla, toffee and blanched almonds come next. Fig and prune sit underneath. On your tongue, the Armagnac finish shows itself with more fig, prune and dried apricot. Caramel and toffee keep it rich. Semi-sweet dark chocolate, cinnamon and clove add warmth. The finish runs long and fairly dry, with oak spice and dark fruit to close.
The blend has a strong record with judges. It took Double Gold at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition in 2021 and 2022. It won Gold in New York in 2023. In 2025 the American Distilling Institute named it Best of Category for bottled and blended bourbon, and Whisky Advocate scored it 92 points.
You will get the most from it neat or with one small ice cube. Pour it beside a medium or full-bodied cigar and let the two trade flavors. It also fits nicely into an evening of premium spirits with friends. Save it for slow sipping rather than cocktails.
