This white wine originates from Germany, specifically the Bernkasteler Lay vineyard within the Middle Mosel. Estate Joh. Jos. Prüm (JJ Prüm) is a legendary producer, globally recognized for its signature style of Riesling that prioritizes extreme elegance, age-worthiness, and a "feather-light" balance. The Bernkasteler Lay vineyard is unique because its soil is composed of medium-deep, stony blue slate—heavier and deeper than in neighboring Wehlen or Graach—which tends to produce wines with a more assertive, richly textured profile.
Wine Description
Appearance: A clear, very pale gold that appears almost weightless in the glass.
Nose: It opens with a "fabulous range" of floral aromas, from European spring blossoms to tropical orchids. This is layered with white and yellow peach, almond cream, and minty herbs, all under a veil of spontaneous fermentation notes (a characteristic "sulfur" or smoky touch that dissipates with air).
Palate: Round and mouth-filling yet incredibly fine. It features concentrated flavors of peach, pear, and apricot, balanced by a crystalline, saline acidity. Critics describe it as "weightless" despite its Auslese sweetness, with a straight, delicate finish that mimics flowers dripping after a tropical storm.
Technical Details: 100% Riesling. Stated alcohol is very low at 7% ABV. It follows the Prüm tradition of stainless steel vinification to preserve absolute fruit purity.
Food Pairing
Because of its impeccable balance between sugar and acid, this Auslese is highly versatile. It is a superb match for rich desserts like fruit tarts, crème brûlée, or peach-based pastries. However, it also excels alongside savory and salty pairings, such as blue cheeses (Gorgonzola or Roquefort) or foie gras. It is also an excellent "meditation wine," enjoyed on its own as its flavors evolve over several hours or even days.
