Jack Daniel's Single Barrel Barrel Proof is the distillery's first barrel-strength whiskey. It joined the Single Barrel Collection in 2015. Each bottle comes from one barrel and is bottled at full proof, with no water added. It is a bigger, bolder cousin of the classic Jack Daniel's you already know.
The recipe is the same one used across Jack Daniel's. It starts with cave spring water and the house yeast. The new spirit is charcoal mellowed before it goes into the barrel. Those barrels are charred American white oak, made at the distillery's own cooperage. The chosen barrels age on the upper floors of the Lynchburg barrelhouses. Big temperature swings up there push more flavor from the wood.
Because every barrel is different, the strength runs from 125 to 140 proof. Check your label for the exact number. Master Distiller Chris Fletcher oversees the barrels today. His predecessor, Jeff Arnett, led the launch after tasting samples drawn straight from these upper floors.
Expect sweet brown sugar and vanilla on the nose. The palate brings rich toasted oak with dark, peppery spice. It feels intense, yet surprisingly smooth for its strength. The finish is long and lingering.
Sip it neat first, then add a few drops of water and taste again. It also makes a bold Old Fashioned. Try it with smoked brisket, grilled ribs or a square of dark chocolate. It is a great step up for fans of Tennessee whiskey and anyone exploring high-proof whiskey.
