This is a classic Brunello di Montalcino, made from 100% Sangiovese. It comes from Tenuta Il Poggione in Sant'Angelo in Colle, on the southern side of Montalcino. It is one of the larger estates in the area. Its vines grow between 150 and 450 meters above sea level. The same family has looked after it for generations.
In the cellar, the grapes ferment in stainless steel with native yeasts. The wine then ages in big French oak casks of 30 to 50 hectoliters. A long rest in bottle follows before release. Those large casks keep the focus on the fruit rather than the wood.
In the glass it is a bright ruby red. The nose is intense and long-lasting, full of red fruit. On the palate it feels warm and balanced. The tannins are smooth as velvet, and the flavor stays with you for a long time.
Critics rate this wine highly year after year. The 2010 vintage was No. 4 on Wine Spectator's Top 100 list. The 2018 earned 96 points from Vinous and 94 from both Wine Spectator and James Suckling. Scores change with each vintage, so check the year on your bottle.
Open it an hour ahead or pour it into a decanter. Serve it just below room temperature. It loves red meat, game and mature cheeses, and a mushroom risotto works well too. This is a wine for a long dinner with people you enjoy.
