Eleven years of silence finally break. Suntory abruptly discontinued this cherished 12-year expression in 2015, sending collectors into an immediate frenzy as worldwide stocks evaporated. Today’s whisky landscape looks vastly different, and the legendary blend returns exclusively to global travel retail with an absolutely formidable new persona. Chief Blender Shinji Fukuyo completely re-engineered the liquid, expertly orchestrating aged malt and grain components from the Yamazaki, Hakushu, and Chita distilleries. This marks a truly triumphant comeback.
The oak dictates the entire narrative. Fukuyo deliberately abandoned the original plum liqueur casks, pivoting toward an intricate triad of American, Spanish, and rare Japanese Mizunara oak. This crucial adjustment builds a formidable wood framework, seamlessly bridging bright citrus characteristics with deep, grounding earthiness across the entire tasting experience. Mizunara notoriously demands immense patience to yield its treasures, yet it layers a distinct sandalwood resonance that radically transforms the whisky's core. It simply glides across the palate. You taste the immense dedication, experiencing a blend that simultaneously honors historical roots and pioneers an entirely new tasting frontier.
Visual presentation matches the liquid's elegance. The heavy glass decanter showcases a stunning Kacho-Fugetsu aesthetic, brilliantly illustrating the perpetual flow of Japanese seasons through intricate cherry blossom and water motifs. Golden detailing adorns the traditional twenty-four facets, asserting a profound luxury that stops short of gaudy indulgence. It commands immediate shelf attention today. This strictly allocated bottle stands as a pivotal marker in Japan's whisky renaissance, offering purists a magnificent artifact of modern blending mastery.
