For lovers of big flavor and spicy, herbal complexity, there is hardly a spirit that so fits the bill like rye whiskey, and hardly a Kentucky distillery that finds as much fondness for such as Heaven Hill. From the quintessential cocktailing rye that is Rittenhouse (Is there a better Manhattan?), to the new and sophisticated Elijah Craig, to the cultish high proof favorite Pikesville, no distillery has quite nailed the balance of sweet and spice that defines Kentucky style rye like they have. Sit back, relax, and dive into this Holy Trinity of rye.
RITTENHOUSE RYE WHISKEY
Entry oozes butter cream, dark caramel, and brown sugar; midpalate focuses more on the grain as the flavor becomes toasty, fruity and honeyed. Ends honey sweet, decadent and maple-like.
ELIJAH CRAIG STRAIGHT RYE WHISKEY
Aromas include butterscotch, caramel-nut clusters, and peppery spice. The spice ramps up on the palate, carried forward by the full body, hearty proof, and mouth-coating texture, as cherry cola, baking chocolate, and darker fruits emerge.
PIKESVILLE 6 YEAR RYE WHISKEY
Wonderfully delicate, with aromas of Boston creme pie, plantain, butternut squash, and brown sugar. Spicy, with a buttery sweetness to match and deep baked dark cherry flavor leading into a vanilla-tinged and spicy finish.
