Heaven Hill shattered its own rigid mold to construct this first-of-its-kind masterpiece. Instead of leaning on another standard age-statement release, the distilling team boldly wove two disparate mashbills into a unified 9-year-old titan. Two-thirds of the liquid stems from their traditional ryed bourbon recipe. The remaining third leverages their softer wheated mashbill. It's a spectacular final blend. Blending these mature stocks before proofing down creates a complex four-grain juggernaut that satisfies the strict 1897 legal parameters while blazing a completely fresh trail for American whiskey.
This whiskey deliberately defies straightforward classification. The extra aging smooths out the rough ethanol edges to leave behind a profoundly soft yet robust liquid structure. It carries immense depth thanks to the fascinating interplay between sharp rye spice and the rounded, creamy influence of red winter wheat. You'll get the aggressive oak tannin of mature stock combined with an unexpected citrus brightness. This contrast anchors the sip.
Pouring a glass reveals exactly why the bottled-in-bond designation still matters today. The 100-proof constraint focuses the dense flavors directly onto the palate so it doesn't scorch your tongue with excess alcohol. Bottled at a prime age of nine years, it easily outshines its younger siblings through sheer complexity, offering a denser mouthfeel and a darker, more brooding flavor profile. It demands your absolute attention.
