Hard Truth Distilling Co. recently discarded the established playbook for modern American rye. By meticulously merging three of their award-winning sweet mash recipes—Chocolate Malt, Caramel Malt, and Malted Rye—the Indiana-based team formulated the RW346 Ensemble. The combined trio elevates the liquid. This Master Distiller’s release commands immediate respect. Bryan Smith crafted a cask-strength behemoth that leans entirely into a pristine sweet mash fermentation, leaving the premium grains completely unmasked and intensely expressive.
The distillate spends over five years developing profound structural integrity within custom-selected oak barrels. High-proof bourbons and ryes routinely pummel the palate with raw ethanol heat, but this specific 115-proof ensemble doesn't overwhelm the senses. It glides with absolute precision. The deliberate interplay between the heavily roasted espresso characteristics of the chocolate malt and the jammy fruit derived from the caramel malt proves genuinely brilliant.
Cerebral and perpetually shifting in the glass, this small-batch rye forces enthusiasts to pay close attention. The deliberate omission of sour backset during fermentation guarantees a starkly clean profile, allowing the peppery grain to spar flawlessly against dense, buttery sugars. It stands as a monumental achievement. You'll struggle to find another spirit that pivots so deftly from unapologetic decadence to grounding, earthy spice.
