Gut Oggau Josephine originates from Austria, specifically from the Burgenland region. The estate was founded in 2007 by Eduard and Stephanie Tscheppe-Eselböck, who restored a 17th-century winery in the town of Oggau. Their winemaking philosophy is rooted in biodynamic viticulture and natural processes, which is reflected in their 'family tree' of wines where each label features a fictional personality. Josephine is introduced as the second wife of Timotheus and stepmother to Winifred, described as an unconventional and easy-going woman who radiates vitality.
Wine Description
This red wine presents a dark, inky purple colour with a powerful depth. The sensory profile is intense and spicy, featuring aromatic notes of blackberries, wild berries, and red plums, complemented by hints of peppery spice, rosemary, leather, and mushrooms. On the medium-to-full-bodied palate, it is juicy and well-structured, offering flavours of dark cherry and beet purée balanced by a zingy acidity and smooth, velvety tannins. The finish is long and persistent, showcasing a refined internal energy.
Varietal Composition: A blend of Roesler and Blaufränkisch.
ABV: Typically 11% to 12.5% depending on the vintage.
Organic Status: Certified biodynamic (Demeter) and organic.
Stylistic Notes: The wine is spontaneously fermented in used oak barrels and matured for approximately eight months; it is bottled without batonnage, fining, filtration, or added sulphur.
