The name California is derived from a popular 16th-century novel about Califa — the mythical queen of an island thought to be the garden of Eden. Gryphon & Grain honors that mythology: the rye is named for Queen Califa's army of 500 gryphons, the legendary creature with the body of a lion and the head and wings of an eagle, known throughout history for guarding treasure and priceless possessions.
This California rye is mahogany in color, full and robust in body, and built for the drinker who appreciates depth and complexity. Butterscotch, maple, and a rainbow of peppercorns on the nose give way to a palate of freshly polished leather, dried apricots, warm butter, and dusty oak — finishing with root beer and brown baking spice.
