Rutting Mule (formerly known as Bighorn) Nut Brown Ale is a foundational flagship from The Grizzly Paw Brewing Company in Canmore, Alberta. Brewing in the heart of the Canadian Rockies since 1996, Grizzly Paw designed this ale to be as rugged and reliable as its mountain namesake. It is a quintessential English-style Brown Ale that prioritizes malt complexity and "comfort" over hop bitterness, making it a legendary après-ski staple for locals and tourists alike.
Beer Description
This Nut Brown Ale pours a deep, clear mahogany with ruby highlights when held to the light, topped with a creamy, tan-colored head.
Aroma: It features a warm and inviting nose led by toasted hazelnuts, roasted malts, and a distinct touch of chocolate. Subtle notes of caramel and brown sugar provide a sweet aromatic backbone.
Palate: On the tongue, it is medium-bodied and exceptionally smooth. It delivers a rich, nutty flavor profile with layers of dark bread crust, toffee, and a hint of mild coffee. The finish is clean and slightly sweet, with just enough earthy hop bitterness to provide balance.
Profile: It has a sessionable ABV of 5.0% and a low bitterness of 20 IBU, making it an approachable and highly drinkable dark ale.
Technical Notes: Brewed with a complex blend of five different malts, including Chocolate and Crystal malts, to achieve its deep color and layered sweetness. It uses traditional English hops for a subtle, earthy structure and is fermented with a clean ale yeast to ensure the malt characteristics remain the primary focus.
