This Cabernet Sauvignon comes from Grgich Hills Estate in Napa Valley. Mike Grgich and Austin Hills founded the winery in 1977. The year before, Mike’s Chardonnay won the famous 1976 Judgment of Paris. The wine is mostly Cabernet Sauvignon. Small parts of Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc round out the blend.
Fruit from Yountville forms the heart of the wine. Grapes from Rutherford and Calistoga add to it. The estate vineyards are certified organic. The team farms with regenerative methods and no artificial fertilizers, pesticides or herbicides. Native yeast starts the ferment, and the wine stays on its skins for about four weeks. It then rests for 20 months in French oak.
Pour a glass and black fruit comes first. Blackberry, black currant and black cherry fill the nose, with a hint of warm spice. The palate brings red and black berries. Bright acidity and lively tannins keep it fresh. The finish is long and full of flavor.
Critics have praised many vintages. James Suckling gave the 2019 a score of 91 points.
It is a natural match for grilled steak or roast lamb. Beef stew and aged cheddar work well too. Decant it briefly to let the fruit open up. If you love a classic, elegant Napa Cabernet with history behind it, this bottle belongs on your table.
