Gosling's Black Seal Bermuda Black Rum. Gosling Brothers, Hamilton, Bermuda — the only rum legally permitted in an authentic Dark 'N' Stormy®, produced since 1806 when Englishman James Gosling's ship was forced to dock in Bermuda, aged 3–6 years in re-charred American oak barrels, and holder of the Platinum Medal from the Beverage Tasting Institute.
In 1806, James Gosling — the son of an English wine and spirit merchant — set out for America with a ship full of spirits. After 91 days at sea, his charter expired and he was forced to dock in the nearest available port: Hamilton, Bermuda. He sold his cargo, set up shop, and never made it to America. Gosling Brothers has been operating in Bermuda ever since. The Black Seal — named for the black sealing wax used to seal the original bottles, which were repurposed Champagne bottles — is their flagship expression and Bermuda's most famous export.
Black Seal is a blend of three distinctly different triple pot-distilled rums sourced from undisclosed Caribbean distilleries, then aged in Bermuda for 3 to 6 years in re-charred American white oak ex-bourbon barrels. The re-charring process deepens the rum's mahogany color and amplifies the caramelized sugar extraction from the wood. A small amount of molasses is added post-aging for color consistency across batches. Gosling Brothers holds the registered trademark on the Dark 'N' Stormy cocktail — a rare case of a spirits producer owning the intellectual property to a classic drink name. The only rum legally permitted in an authentic Dark 'N' Stormy is Black Seal. Platinum Medal, Beverage Tasting Institute; 96 points, World Spirits Championship.
Tasting Notes
- Nose: Rich butterscotch and caramel lead, followed by dark molasses, allspice, and dried fruit. Fruitcake, herbal and spice notes, banana, and vanilla. A subtle estery stewed-fruit quality from the pot still distillate.
- Palate: Rich and full-bodied with a creamy mouthfeel. Butterscotch and vanilla lead into fruitcake, baking spices, cinnamon warmth, and stewed fruits. Brown sugar, raisins, nutmeg, and a slightly bitter herbal complexity from the re-charred oak.
- Finish: Mouth-drying with dark muscovado, spicy cinnamon, burnt currants, and clove. Herbal spiciness felt strongly at the back of the palate. Long and robust.

Frequently Asked Questions
- What does Gosling's Black Seal taste like? Rich butterscotch, caramel, dark molasses, allspice, and dried fruit on the nose with fruitcake and banana. The palate is full-bodied and creamy with butterscotch, vanilla, baking spices, cinnamon, and stewed fruits. The finish is long and mouth-drying with dark muscovado, burnt currants, and herbal spice.
- What is the Dark 'N' Stormy and why can it only be made with Gosling's? The Dark 'N' Stormy is Bermuda's national cocktail — Gosling's Black Seal over ice with ginger beer and a lime wedge. Gosling Brothers holds the registered trademark on the name, meaning legally only Black Seal can be called the rum in an authentic Dark 'N' Stormy.
- Why is it called Black Seal? Not for the sea mammal — for the black sealing wax used to close the original bottles, which were repurposed Champagne bottles. The black wax seal became so associated with the product that it gave the rum its name.
- Is Black Seal good for sipping neat? It is full-flavored enough to sip, but it is primarily designed as a cocktail rum. Its bold molasses and spice character makes it exceptional in a Dark 'N' Stormy, Rum Old Fashioned, or Jungle Bird where dark rum's depth is needed.
- How does Gosling's compare to other dark rums like Myers's? Both are full-bodied dark rums, but Black Seal leans toward butterscotch and fruitcake complexity, while Myers's is typically described as heavier on raw molasses with a slightly funkier Jamaican pot still character. Black Seal has more refinement from its Bermuda aging; Myers's has more raw molasses punch.
