Gordon & MacPhail
Gordon & MacPhail was founded in Elgin in 1895 and is still owned by the Urquhart family. It is an independent bottler: it buys and fills its own casks, matures them, and bottles the whisky under its own labels. This is not a distillery release.
The whisky
This Benriach was distilled on 2 August 1999 at the Speyside distillery near Elgin and matured in refill sherry butt 63204. Gordon & MacPhail bottled it on 27 February 2024 at cask strength, 57.1% ABV, for their Connoisseurs Choice range, yielding 492 bottles of dark gold whisky.
How to enjoy it
Start neat with a small pour, then add water gradually. Water softens the strength and brings the baked apple and orange forward. A square of dark chocolate or a piece of aged Cheddar suits it well.
