Introduction
Glenmorangie 12 Year Old is a premium Highland single malt Scotch whisky produced at the Glenmorangie Distillery in Tain, Ross-shire, Scotland. Founded in 1843 by William Matheson, the distillery is home to the tallest stills in Scotland and is currently owned by the French luxury goods company Louis Vuitton Moët Hennessy (LVMH). In summer 2024, the distillery announced a major shift in its core range, replacing its flagship 'The Original 10 Year Old' with a new 'The Original 12 Year Old' expression to offer increased silkiness and complexity.
Spirit Description
The core 12-year-old expressions typically feature a marriage of spirit aged in American white oak ex-bourbon casks, with some versions receiving secondary maturation in specialized wine or sherry casks.
Colour: The 'The Original 12 Year Old' displays a vibrant amber or golden hue. The 'Lasanta' expression is noted for its ruddy copper or medium orange colour.
Aroma: The flagship 12-year-old nose is inviting and creamy, featuring orange marmalade, honey, vanilla, and tinned peaches. The 'Lasanta' variant offers deeper notes of raisins, honeycomb, and chocolate-covered hazelnuts.
Palate: It provides a silky, thick, and tongue-coating texture. Flavours include vanilla, apricot, dark chocolate, and floral honeysuckle, balanced by a touch of orange and pepper.
Body: The whisky is medium-bodied and velvety, known for its smooth elegance and creamy mouthfeel.
Finish: It concludes with a medium to long finish characterized by honeyed maltiness, tropical fruit sweetness, and a hint of zesty ginger or oak.
ABV: 'The Original 12 Year Old' is bottled at 40%. The 'Lasanta' expression is typically bottled at 43% or 46%.
