This structured and 'crystalline' red wine originates from Italy, within the esteemed Barbera d'Alba D.O.C. appellation of Piedmont's Langhe district. Gian Luca Colombo, awarded the prestigious Premio Gambelli in 2014 as Italy's best young winemaker, crafts this exceptional wine under his Segni di Langa project based in Roddi. Operating under an uncompromising, low-intervention, and organic-leaning philosophy, Colombo is celebrated for capturing pure varietal identity and terroir expression without heavy-handed oak intervention. Sourced from high-elevation, low-yielding old vineyards in the communes of Roddi and Verduno, the vines are rooted in Tortonian soils rich in calcareous marl and sand. The unique microclimate characterized by warm, sun-drenched summer days balanced by cool evening breezes off the Maritime Alps allows Barbera to achieve full phenolic maturity while preserving its signature, mouthwatering natural acidity.
Wine Description
Gian Luca Colombo-Segni di Langa Barbera d'Alba presents an intense, luminous ruby-purple color in the glass with vivid violet reflections at the rim. Its sensory profile is exceptionally fresh, high-toned, and complex, delivering an artisanal, highly energetic expression of top-tier Barbera. The bouquet opens with a vibrant, perfumed display of crushed dark plums, wild blackberries, and tart red cherries, seamlessly layered with complex underlays of dried violets, crushed limestone, black pepper, graphite, and a subtle touch of Mediterranean scrub and orange zest. On the palate, the wine is medium-to-full-bodied, sleek, and precisely focused, showcasing a succulent core of dark orchard fruits, pomegranate, and cocoa nibs. It is characterized by its outstanding inner energy and an incisive, electric backbone of natural acidity that cuts cleanly through the mid-palate fruit density. The mouthfeel is broad yet weightless and supple, framed by fine-grained, silk-textured tannins that glide into a long, lip-smacking, and mineral-driven finish accented by lingering notes of dark berry compote and spice.
