Flor de Caña Gran Reserva is a 7 year old rum from Nicaragua. It is made on a single estate by a family business that dates back to 1890. The rum ages in American white oak barrels at the foot of an active volcano. Those barrels once held bourbon. The spirit is distilled five times from sugarcane molasses. It is distilled with renewable energy and is certified carbon neutral. There is no added sugar.
Pour a glass and toasted coconut comes through first. Vanilla and ripe figs follow close behind. On the palate, honey meets dark chocolate and roasted nuts. The body is full and rounded, and the color is a deep mahogany. The finish is long and smooth, with no harsh bite at the end.
Judges have taken notice. This rum won a Gold Medal at the 2019 San Francisco World Spirits Competition. That is a strong result for a bottle you can open on any weeknight.
The brand likes it tall, with soda, sparkling water or ginger ale. Try the Flor Ginger: two ounces of rum and three ounces of ginger ale over ice. Add an orange wedge to finish. You can also sip it on the rocks. Grilled meats, caramel desserts and dark chocolate all sit well beside it.
