The Ferio Tego Metropolitan Maduro Petites are a reminder that a small cigar doesn't have to be an afterthought. Metropolitan dates back to the Nat Sherman era, and Ferio Tego has deliberately preserved these longstanding blends rather than reinventing them. The Maduro is an especially traditional recipe: Connecticut Broadleaf Maduro over Dominican binder and filler, made by the Quesada family in the Dominican Republic. It's the sort of uncomplicated tobacco combination that has kept Metropolitan on tobacconist shelves for decades.
At 4" x 43, the Petites give that Broadleaf wrapper considerably more influence than it has in the larger Metropolitan formats. The result is mellow but flavorful, with earthy tobacco, cocoa and a restrained natural sweetness carrying most of the profile. The Dominican core keeps things smooth and composed rather than pushing the cigar toward strength. And like most narrow-ring cigars, the Petites are better when smoked slowly—there isn't much tobacco between the ember and the palate to absorb an impatient smoking pace.
This is exactly the sort of small cigar a good humidor should have tucked away. It offers real Broadleaf character, traditional proportions and enough substance to satisfy when there isn't time for something larger. Keep a five-pack handy for coffee, a short drive or the end of the evening. Twenty or thirty minutes with good tobacco beats an hour with the wrong cigar.
