The Ferio Tego Metropolitan Connecticut Gordo comes from a line with considerably more history than its understated presentation might suggest. Metropolitan was originally part of the Nat Sherman portfolio, where it served for decades as the approachable, everyday side of the company’s premium cigar business. When Michael Herklots and Brendon Scott acquired the former Nat Sherman cigar brands and formed Ferio Tego, Metropolitan came with them—a worthwhile bit of continuity for smokers who remember these cigars from the Nat Sherman years.
The Connecticut expression pairs an Ecuadorian Connecticut Shade wrapper with a Nicaraguan core, producing the sort of Connecticut cigar a tobacconist can comfortably recommend beyond the traditional “mild cigar” customer. At 6" x 60, the Gordo puts considerably more emphasis on the interior tobacco than the smaller Metropolitan sizes. The character remains smooth and composed, with cedar, toasted tobacco and a gentle nuttiness, accompanied by just enough sweetness and spice to keep the cigar from becoming flat. The large ring gauge makes it particularly cool-smoking when given an unhurried pace.
This is a good cigar for the smoker who wants a substantial 60-ring smoke without the strength that so often accompanies the format. Metropolitan Connecticut has never needed to be complicated to make its case—it is well-made, balanced and dependable. For a long morning smoke, an afternoon with coffee, or simply a gentler change of pace, the Gordo is worth keeping in the humidor.
