Ezra Brooks 99 is a higher-proof extension of the Ezra Brooks bourbon line. It’s bottled at 99 proof (49.5% ABV) and presented as a straight Kentucky bourbon whiskey. The idea is to bring more intensity and character compared to their lower proof expressions while retaining the core brand style.
It’s distilled in Kentucky, matured in oak barrels, and then charcoal filtered before bottling to help smooth the finish. The mash bill is rye-spiced, leaning toward a profile with noticeable rye influence.
Tasting Profile
Appearance
Deep amber with golden reflections—warm and rich in color.
Nose / Aromas
On the nose one finds classic bourbon aromas: vanilla, caramel, and toasted oak dominate, with subtle hints of chocolate, light spice (nutmeg or cinnamon), and a touch of peanut or nutty character. The rye influence adds a whisper of baking spice.
Palate / Flavors
The palate delivers a solid core of caramel and brown sugar, with oak tannins, rye spice, and a thread of dark chocolate or cocoa. There’s some nuttiness (peanut or walnut) and moderate warmth from the proof. It’s richer than the lower proof Ezra offerings, but not so heavy as to obscure the sweetness and spice interplay.
Finish
The finish is medium to long. Oak and spice linger, accompanied by caramel and a touch of dry rye heat. The sweetness recedes gradually, leaving a warm, oaky echo and a dry, satisfying tail.
Character, Strength & Use
-
Proof / ABV: 99 proof (49.5% ABV)
-
Style: Straight Kentucky bourbon, rye-spiced mash bill
-
Filtration: Charcoal filtered for smoother texture
Ezra Brooks 99 sits between their entry-level bottlings and more robust offerings. The raised proof gives it extra backbone for sipping or for use in cocktails. It’s especially suitable for bourbon cocktails—Old Fashioned, Boulevardier, Manhattan—where you want a base with character that won’t get lost under mixers.
Because it retains the brand’s approachable style but with more presence, it can appeal to both newcomers and those who prefer more proof without going full cask strength.
