My Best Friend’s Girl is the multi-award-winning Kölsch-style Ale from Calgary’s The Establishment Brewing Company. It is arguably one of the most decorated beers in Canada, having won Gold at the World Beer Cup (the "Olympics of Beer"). Named after the classic song by The Cars, this beer is the ultimate "bridge" style: it is fermented with ale yeast but finished with a long, cold lagering period. The result is a beer that possesses the delicate fruitiness of an ale and the crisp, clean snap of a lager.
Beer Description
This Kölsch-style ale pours a brilliant, crystal-clear pale straw-gold with a dense, sparkling white head and exceptionally fine carbonation.
Aroma: The nose is elegant, subtle, and incredibly clean. It leads with a delicate scent of honeyed pilsner malt and fresh-baked white bread, followed by a faint, characteristic fruitiness, think ripe pear or green apple. There is a soft, floral hop presence from traditional German Noble hops.
Palate: On the tongue, it is light-bodied with a soft, "pillowy" mouthfeel that quickly transitions into a brisk, effervescent finish. It leads with a mild, grainy sweetness that is perfectly balanced by a restrained, herbal bitterness. The finish is remarkably dry and clean, leaving virtually no aftertaste.
Profile: It sits at a highly sessionable 4.8% ABV and a low-to-moderate bitterness of approx. 20–25 IBU, prioritizing balance and refreshment.
Technical Notes: Establishment treats this beer with immense technical respect, adhering to the traditional brewing methods of Cologne, Germany. It is brewed with 100% German Pilsner malt and hopped with Hallertau Mittelfrüh. The "secret" is the specific Kölsch yeast strain, which produces those signature faint fruit esters, and a meticulous cold-conditioning (lagering) process that ensures its "diamond" clarity and smooth profile.
