Earth + Ember: Wild Ras El-Hanout
A sacred spice, reimagined.
105g shaker
Saltiness Index: 4/10 (moderate)
The Essence
Where the spice route meets the forest path. This blend begins with traditional North African warmth, then diverges into boreal wilds with chaga's earthy depth and usnea's alpine astringency. The Oregon grape root—bitter, medicinal—anchors the brightness.
Composition & Craft
- Chaga harvested from living birch trees (never deadfall)
- Usnea gathered only after rainy spells, when active compounds peak
- Ras el Hanout mortar-ground in small batches
- Oregon grape root wild-dug with root crown intact
To Use
- Rub on lamb or roasted squash before cooking
- Steep ¼ tsp in hot water with honey (a mineral-rich tonic)
- The last pinch in your broth pot transforms it
Why This Price
The calculus of wild things:
Chaga yields 1kg powder per 100kg of mushroom
Usnea requires hand-cleaning of forest debris
Oregon grape needs 5 years to mature before harvest
This is not mere spice, but reciprocity—what the land offers only when approached rightly. A shaker of guarded generosity.
