Raised by Wolves is the celebrated "Juicy IPA" from Victoria’s Driftwood Brewery. While Driftwood is legendary for the aggressive, piney bitterness of their flagship Fat Tug IPA, Raised by Wolves represents their masterful take on the modern, fruit-forward movement. It is designed to prioritize "hop saturation" over bitterness, offering a lush, tropical experience that remains true to Driftwood’s reputation for technical excellence and bold flavor profiles.
Beer Description
This Juicy IPA pours a hazy, glowing apricot-gold with a soft, frothy white head and a moderate, lively carbonation.
Aroma: It features an explosive and "dank" tropical nose. Expect dominant scents of ripe mango, squeezed tangerine, and juicy stone fruits (like peach and nectarine), underscored by a subtle, resinous floral note that adds depth.
Palate: On the tongue, it is medium-bodied with a soft, rounded mouthfeel. It leads with a delicate, bready malt sweetness that serves as a canvas for a wave of tropical fruit flavors—guava and pineapple predominate. Unlike a traditional West Coast IPA, the finish is smooth and low-bitterness, allowing the hop oils to linger pleasantly without a sharp "bite."
Profile: It has a robust ABV of 7.0% and a moderate-to-low perceived bitterness, hiding its strength behind its approachable, juice-like character.
Technical Notes: Brewed with a heavy emphasis on late-addition and dry-hopping using a blend of modern Northwest hops (typically including Citra and Mosaic). The use of oats and wheat in the grain bill provides the signature protein haze and silky texture, while a specific yeast strain is used to enhance the fruity esters that complement the hop profile.
