Fat Tug IPA is a heavyweight champion of the Pacific Northwest and the legendary flagship of Victoria’s Driftwood Brewing. Often cited as one of the best IPAs in Canada, it has won more gold medals than almost any other domestic craft beer. It is the definitive Northwest-style IPA: a high-octane, uncompromising brew that balances a massive hop profile with a sturdy malt backbone. It is designed for the "hop aficionado," offering an intense, multi-layered experience that has made it a benchmark for the style across the country.
Beer Description
Fat Tug pours a slightly hazy, deep golden-orange with a thick, creamy white head and exceptional "lacing"—the sticky foam rings that cling to the glass as you drink.
Aroma: The nose is an absolute powerhouse of Pacific Northwest aromatics. It leads with dominant notes of pungent pine resin and grapefruit peel, followed by an exotic medley of mango, melon, and passion fruit. There is a subtle, biscuity sweetness from the malt that provides a necessary counterpoint to the aggressive hop scent.
Palate: On the tongue, it is medium-to-full bodied with a firm, resinous mouthfeel. It leads with a brief flash of caramel sweetness and tropical fruit, which is rapidly overtaken by an intense, assertive bitterness. Flavors of tangerine and spruce dominate the mid-palate, leading to a long, dry, and lingering bitter finish that is the hallmark of the style.
Profile: It sits at a robust 7.0% ABV and a staggering 80+ IBU, delivering a profound "bite" that remains surprisingly balanced.
Technical Notes: The complexity of Fat Tug is achieved through a diverse hop bill featuring Cascade, Columbus, Centennial, Amarillo, and Citra. These are layered over a base of Pilsner, Crystal, and Carapils malts. The brewery utilizes heavy kettle additions for that famous bitterness and significant dry-hopping to capture the volatile tropical oils. Despite its high IBU, the "slick" mouthfeel and malt support prevent it from feeling thin or overly astringent.
