Clos La Coutale Malbec originates from France, within the Southwest France region and the Cahors appellation. The estate is a historic property that has been managed by the Bernède family for six generations, with Philippe Bernède currently at the helm. The vineyard’s philosophy focuses on a blend of traditional expertise and modern innovation, such as the invention of the famous Coutale corkscrew and a revolutionary 'pigeur' (punch-down device) by Philippe to enhance wine structure. The 100-hectare estate sits on alluvial soils composed of gravel and clay-limestone silica, specifically positioned with southwest exposure to protect the vines from extreme cold.
Wine Description
This red wine is recognized for its deep purple colour and a medium to full body. The sensory profile features a rich and complex nose of dark plum, damson, and raspberries, interwoven with herbal notes of rosemary, dried herbs, and mint, alongside hints of black pepper and licorice. On the palate, it is fresh and juicy, delivering a concentrated core of blue and black fruits supported by firm yet velvety tannins and a distinct chalky minerality. The finish is medium-long and refreshing, showcasing an elegant balance between fruit intensity and earthy undertones.
Varietal Composition: A traditional Cahors blend typically consisting of 80% to 85% Malbec (locally known as Côt) and 15% to 20% Merlot.
Stylistic Notes: The wine is aged in oak barrels and wooden casks for 12 to 18 months, a process that refines the tannins and adds complexity to the bouquet while softening the Malbec’s natural intensity.
ABV: Typically ranges from 13% to 13.5%.
Organic Status: Clos La Coutale commenced its conversion to organic agriculture in 2019.
