Chinotto orange liqueur is an Italian digestivo and cocktail modifier crafted from the Citrus myrtifolia, a small, intensely sour, and bittersweet citrus fruit grown heavily along the Ligurian Riviera and Piedmont regions of Italy. To capture its distinctive flavor, producers hand-harvest the miniature, dark green fruits and macerate the peel and flesh in neutral spirits for several months before pressing the liquid and aging the final infusion. The resulting spirit carries a complex profile rich with notes of dark orange peel, rhubarb, vanilla, dandelion, and a lightly medicinal, earthy finish.
This versatile liqueur is traditionally served neat or over a large ice cube after meals to aid digestion, serving as a classic Italian digestivo. In modern mixology, its unique bittersweet balance makes it an excellent craft modifier and an intriguing alternative to standard triple sec, curaçao, or traditional amari. It pairs exceptionally well in highballs, neat pours, or complex cocktails alongside ingredients like rum, fernet, sweet vermouth, tonic water, and sparkling chinotto soda.
