Introduction
This sweet white dessert wine originates from France, specifically from the Sauternes appellation in Bordeaux. Chateau Petit Vedrines is the second label of Chateau Doisy Vedrines, a prestigious Second Growth estate in the 1855 Classification. The winery is located on the clay and limestone plateau of Haut Barsac and has been owned by the Casteja family since the mid 19th century. The winemaking philosophy emphasizes a balance of traditional methods, such as manual harvests in multiple passes to select botrytis affected grapes, and modern techniques to ensure trademark richness and finesse.
Wine Description
Chateau Petit Vedrines Sauternes presents a brilliant golden colour with a luminous clarity. The nose is intense and complex, offering a fragrant bouquet of honey, apricot, and mango, layered with candied citrus fruits and subtle notes of honeysuckle and ginger. On the palate, the wine is full bodied and luscious, displaying a honeyed richness and tropical fruit flavours that are perfectly offset by a precise, refreshing acidity. It is characterized by its energetic structure and a fine mineral streak that leads to a long, elegant finish. This wine is typically a blend of 80% Semillon, 15% Sauvignon Blanc, and 5% Muscadelle, with an ABV of 13%. While the estate follows traditional sustainable viticulture, it is not certified organic. The optimal drinking window is from now through 2045.
Food Pairing
The vibrant acidity and unctuous sweetness of this Sauternes make it a versatile partner for both savory and sweet dishes. It pairs perfectly with classic foie gras, blue veined cheeses like Roquefort, or chicken liver pate. Its honeyed and tropical fruit profile also complements fruit tarts, lemon mousse, and apricot based desserts. For a modern pairing, it is surprisingly effective with spicy Asian dishes where the sugar helps balance the heat of ginger and chili.
