Cazcanes No. 9 Blanco is a high-proof blanco tequila bottled at 50% ABV, or 100 proof. It comes from Jalisco's Tequila Valley and is made from 100% blue Weber agave. The agave is picked at peak sugar levels. The water is natural spring water from the Navichi springs.
The agave is cooked in a low-pressure autoclave and crushed with a roller mill. Wild yeast handles the fermentation, without the agave fibers. The tequila is then distilled twice in a pot still with a copper coil. The batches are small, and the strength stays high.
Pour a glass and you'll notice spring flowers first, then sweet agave and a bright grapefruit note. Earthy hints and a little anise sit underneath. The sip brings cooked agave and black pepper, with grapefruit and anise again. A mineral edge keeps it fresh. The finish is long and smooth, with sweet floral notes and peppercorn.
Judges have taken notice. Back to back, in 2017 and 2018, it took Double Gold at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition. At the 2024 TAG Global Spirits Awards it earned Double Gold, 92 points and Best in Show. VinePair scored it 94 points.
Sip it neat to see how gentle 100 proof can feel. A single ice cube opens it up further. It also makes a bold margarita, Paloma or cocktail. Pair it with grilled fish, ceviche, shrimp tacos or fresh guacamole. You'll enjoy it most if you like a strong, clean agave pour.
