The Caldwell Long Live the King Mad MoFo Maduro Corona puts one of Caldwell's most muscular blends into a traditional 5¾" x 43 format—and that's where things get interesting. A dark Mexican San Andrés Maduro wrapper surrounds an Indonesian binder and a multinational filler blend of Dominican, Nicaraguan and American tobaccos, including aged Corojo ’98 and Pennsylvania Double Ligero. It's serious tobacco, but the Corona gives it considerably more finesse than you might expect from something carrying the Mad MoFo name.
That slender 43 ring gauge puts the San Andrés wrapper firmly in the driver's seat. Dark cocoa, cedar and earthy sweetness meet black pepper, leather and roasted coffee, while the Pennsylvania Double Ligero supplies depth and strength underneath. There's plenty of power, but in this format it feels concentrated rather than simply heavy. Smoke it slowly and the Corona reveals the interplay between the dark Mexican wrapper and the stronger tobaccos beneath it—the kind of balance that can get lost in an oversized cigar.
For the experienced Maduro smoker, this may be the Mad MoFo size to seek out first. The Corona delivers all the richness and muscle the blend promises, but with the wrapper influence and concentration that make a smaller ring gauge so rewarding. If you appreciate San Andrés and still believe 43 is plenty of ring gauge for a serious cigar, put several of these in the humidor.
