The Caldwell Eastern Standard Manzanita is a small cigar with a surprisingly serious tobacco pedigree. Eastern Standard was one of Robert Caldwell’s original blends when he launched Caldwell Cigar Co. in 2014, and it was created for smokers who appreciate the refinement of Connecticut Shade but want more flavor and depth than the style typically delivers. The key is an unusual proprietary wrapper incorporating Mata Fina Connecticut Shade and Brazilian Arapiraca, laid over a blend that includes aged Dominican Criollo ’98, Corojo Ligero and Nicaraguan Habano. The pale wrapper may suggest an easygoing Connecticut, but there is considerably more tobacco underneath than appearances would indicate.
At just 4" x 42, the Manzanita is an especially good size for this blend. The slender ring gauge keeps the wrapper prominent, bringing cream, cedar and a gentle natural sweetness to the foreground, while the Dominican and Nicaraguan tobaccos add toasted nuts, earth and a measured peppery finish. There's enough Ligero in the recipe to give the cigar some backbone, but never so much that it overwhelms the finesse of the wrapper. The result is creamy without being bland and flavorful without becoming heavy.
For smokers who still appreciate traditional smaller-ring cigars, the Manzanita is a gem. It burns with more concentration than the larger Eastern Standard sizes and lets you taste the interplay between the delicate wrapper and richer tobaccos beneath it. It's also proof that a 4 x 42 cigar doesn't have to be an abbreviated version of something larger. The Manzanita stands on its own—a compact, beautifully balanced smoke with far more character than its size or light complexion would have you expect.
