The Caldwell Blind Man's Bluff Maduro Robusto shows just how far Robert Caldwell was willing to take the concept that began with the original Blind Man's Bluff. Introduced as one of Caldwell Cigar Co.'s early moves beyond its Dominican roots, Blind Man's Bluff initially established a distinctly Honduran side of the young company's personality. The Maduro takes another turn entirely. Rather than simply placing a dark wrapper over the existing recipe, Caldwell created a different blend around a rugged Pennsylvania Broadleaf Maduro wrapper, an Indonesian Sumatra binder and Dominican filler tobaccos. It's a combination that gives Blind Man's Bluff a darker, richer identity while retaining the slightly unconventional blending approach that has always distinguished Caldwell.
At 5" x 50, the Robusto puts that Pennsylvania Broadleaf front and center. Broadleaf brings its characteristic earthiness and natural sweetness, backed by dark wood, cocoa, coffee and pepper from the tobaccos underneath. There's also a surprising creamy quality running through the blend, preventing the cigar from becoming as heavy as its dark appearance might suggest. The traditional 50-ring Robusto proportions keep plenty of wrapper burning relative to the filler, making this the most concentrated way to experience what the Broadleaf contributes.
For smokers familiar with the Connecticut version, the contrast is substantial. Where Connecticut emphasizes cream, cedar and accessibility, the Maduro heads toward earth, dark sweetness and old-fashioned Broadleaf character. Yet this isn't intended as a powerhouse for power's sake. The Robusto is compact, richly flavored and decidedly tobacco-driven—a fitting Blind Man's Bluff for the smoker who prefers the darker side of Caldwell.
