The Caldwell Blind Man's Bluff Connecticut Toro represents the more approachable side of one of Robert Caldwell's formative cigar projects. Blind Man's Bluff originally appeared in 2015, only about a year after Caldwell Cigar Co. was founded, and was notable for moving beyond the Dominican production that had defined much of the young company's portfolio. The cigars were made in Honduras at Agroindustrias Laepe, the Davidoff-owned operation associated with Camacho, giving Caldwell an opportunity to work with a distinctly Central American tobacco palette. The Connecticut variation followed the original Habano blend, exchanging its darker Ecuadorian Habano wrapper for Ecuadorian Connecticut Shade.
Underneath is a Honduran binder and a combination of Dominican and Honduran fillers built around San Vicente tobacco. That interior blend is what separates Blind Man's Bluff from Connecticut cigars designed simply to be mild. The wrapper contributes cream, vanilla-like sweetness and aromatic cedar, while the tobacco underneath supplies earth, toasted nuts and a measured peppery edge. The result remains approachable, but there is enough structure underneath the creaminess to keep the cigar from disappearing on the palate.
The 6" x 52 Toro may be the most balanced presentation of the three core sizes. It preserves enough wrapper influence for the Connecticut character to remain prominent while giving the Honduran and Dominican tobaccos additional length to develop. It's a useful cigar for smokers who enjoy Connecticut Shade but have moved beyond cigars that are merely mild—smooth and composed on the surface, with a more interesting tobacco story underneath.
