Cakebread Cellars has made wine in Napa Valley since Jack and Dolores Cakebread founded it in 1973. Their Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon has been a cornerstone of the family winery for decades. The 2020 vintage blends 91% Cabernet Sauvignon with small amounts of Merlot, Petit Verdot and Malbec.
Fruit comes from Rutherford, Oakville, warm Calistoga and the cool Suscol area. It was picked by hand at night. The wine then aged 17 months in French oak barrels, just under half of them new.
You will smell ripe blackberry and boysenberry first, with dark chocolate and toasty oak behind them. The palate is rich and smooth. Lush dark fruit is balanced by fresh acidity and plush tannins. It closes with a long, elegant finish and a hint of minerality. The 2020 is 14.9% ABV.
It drinks well now or can rest in your cellar for years. Open it with braised short ribs, a grilled steak, lamb chops or grilled portobello mushrooms.
It suits a dinner party or a gift. If you collect Napa Valley wines, this premium wine belongs on your rack.
