This 2019 Benchland Select Cabernet Sauvignon comes from Cakebread Cellars in Napa Valley. It is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. The grapes grow on benchland sites in Oakville and Rutherford, including Hill Ranch around the Cakebread family home.
These western benchlands get less of the hot afternoon sun, so they stay a little cooler. Their well-drained loam soils still hold enough water to ripen the fruit. Five clones from several blocks went into the wine. It then aged 22 months in French oak barrels, 57% of them new.
Lift the glass and you will smell blackberry, cassis and boysenberry, with hints of mocha and vanilla. The palate is silky and concentrated. Intense black fruit rests on fine-grained tannins. The finish is long and rich, with dark chocolate and fig.
The wine is full-bodied at 14.8% ABV. Cakebread says you can open it now or cellar it for about another ten years.
Serve it with lamb in almost any form, from grilled chops to a spice-crusted rack. A filet mignon or a rib roast with horseradish sauce works well too. It is a fine choice when you want a polished Napa Cabernet for a special dinner.
