Cadenhead’s “Enigma” 14 Year Old Highland Single Malt is a bold yet balanced whisky, revealing smoky Highland character woven with creamy sweetness and subtle spice. Bottled at 53.9% ABV, it shows the precision and confidence of an independent bottling—complex enough for connoisseurs, yet approachable for anyone seeking depth and intrigue in a single malt.
Origins & Craftsmanship
Bottled by William Cadenhead Ltd., Scotland’s oldest independent bottler, this whisky comes from an undisclosed Highland distillery, true to the “Enigma” range’s mysterious spirit. Distilled in 2009 and bottled in 2024, it matured for 14 years in a mix of 65% refill sherry butts and 35% refill bourbon hogsheads. The sherry influence brings richness and dried-fruit tones, while the bourbon casks add brightness and structure. It is non-chill filtered and naturally coloured, preserving its full body and authentic texture.
Tasting Profile
-
Nose: Smoky and enticing, with aromas of crisp bacon, vanilla custard, banana fritter and butterscotch mousse. Hints of toasted cereal, dried cranberry and barley sweetness lift the aroma.
-
Palate: Medium-full bodied with vibrant malt character. Flavours of smouldering embers, honeycomb, treacle and gingerbread unfold, balanced by oak spice and a touch of saline minerality.
-
Finish: Long and warming—nutmeg, dark syrup and soft smoke linger, leaving a savoury, slightly mineral finish that evokes damp earth and gorse bush after rain.
