Grasshopper Wheat Ale is an undisputed legend in the Canadian craft beer landscape. Launched in 1994 by Calgary’s Big Rock Brewery, it was one of the first "alternative" beers to gain massive mainstream success in Alberta. While the market at the time was dominated by heavy lagers and ales, Grasshopper introduced drinkers to the soft, breezy world of Kristallweizen (clear wheat beer). It was designed to be the ultimate "summer in a glass"—light, approachable, and famously clear for a wheat ale. For decades, it has been the go-to pint on every Calgary patio.
Beer Description
Grasshopper pours a brilliant, crystal-clear pale gold with a bright white head and a steady stream of lively carbonation. Unlike its cloudy Belgian or German cousins, it is filtered to a sparkling "diamond" clarity.
Aroma: The nose is clean, subtle, and incredibly fresh. It leads with a delicate scent of fresh-cracked wheat and sweet honeyed malt, followed by a very faint, fruity ester—think light pear or apple. There is a soft, herbal hop presence in the background that keeps the bouquet crisp.
Palate: On the tongue, it is light-bodied with a crisp, "zippy" mouthfeel. It leads with a gentle, bready sweetness from the wheat, followed by a mild, floral bitterness. The finish is remarkably clean and "short," meaning it refreshes the palate instantly without any lingering heaviness or spice.
Profile: It sits at a very sessionable 5.0% ABV and a low bitterness of 16 IBU, prioritizing maximum refreshment.
Technical Notes: Grasshopper is brewed using a blend of malted wheat and two-row Alberta barley. The high wheat content provides a signature soft texture, even after filtration. It is fermented with a neutral ale yeast at cooler temperatures to prevent the heavy "clove and banana" flavors found in traditional Hefeweizens. The beer is then finely filtered, which removes the yeast haze and creates its famous, sparkling appearance while retaining the delicate grain flavors.
