The Contrasts range
The Contrasts range is where Benromach steps away from its Signature style to test one variable at a time, such as the barley, the oak, the distillation or the peat. Each release is a limited small batch, bottled at 46% ABV with natural colour.
The whisky
Peat Smoke is Benromach's most intensely peated single malt, made from barley peated several times more heavily than the 10-12 PPM used in the Signature range. The 2012 vintage was matured only in first-fill bourbon barrels, which keep the smoke bright and add vanilla, lemon and apricot-like fruit. It was bottled in 2022.
How to enjoy it
Taste it neat first; the bourbon-cask sweetness balances the smoke. A drop of water softens the peat and brings out the citrus. It works well with smoked salmon or grilled meat.

How peated is it?
The 2012 vintage was made from barley peated to around 55 PPM phenol, against about 10-12 PPM for Benromach's Signature range, so the smoke is far more pronounced.
Is there a sherry cask version?
Yes. Benromach also released a 2012 Peat Smoke matured in first-fill Oloroso sherry hogsheads, bottled in 2021. This bottling is the first-fill bourbon version, which is lighter, with more vanilla and citrus.
