Benromach Contrasts: Air Dried Oak 2012 was distilled in 2012 and bottled in 2023 after maturing in casks of American virgin oak whose staves were seasoned outdoors in the open air. Made from Benromach's lightly peated spirit and bottled at 46% ABV, it was released alongside a Kiln Dried Oak twin from the same vintage.

The Contrasts range
The Contrasts range is where Benromach steps away from its Signature style to test one variable at a time, such as the barley, the oak, the distillation or the peat. Each release is a limited small batch, bottled at 46% ABV with natural colour.
The whisky
The variable here is how the oak was dried before it became casks. These staves of American virgin oak, which had never held another liquid, were left to season slowly outdoors. Benromach say the slower drying gives sweet vanilla fudge, toasted cereal and citrus blossom. The spirit is the distillery's lightly peated make, at around 12 PPM.
How to enjoy it
The best way to taste it is beside the Kiln Dried Oak 2012: same spirit, same vintage, different oak preparation. Taste both neat, then with a drop of water.
