This fortified wine originates from Portugal, specifically the Madeira region.
Vinhos Barbeito is one of the youngest Madeira houses, founded in 1946 during a challenging period following World War II. The founder, Mario Barbeito, began by acquiring significant stocks of old vintages.
Today, the company is run by his grandson, Ricardo Diogo Freitas, who focuses on a quality-driven, forward-thinking direction. Ricardo’s philosophy includes offering only 100% Canteiro wines and using additional aging periods, while avoiding the addition of caramel or deacidification.

Wine Description
-
The Barbeito Verdelho Reserva 10 Year is a medium-dry Madeira made from 100% Verdelho grapes.
-
It presents a bright, light gold colour.
-
The wine offers notes of light polished wood, ripe citrus, floral notes, white sultanas, and honey on the nose. Other notes mentioned include citrus peel, blossom, mushroom, almond, and orange marmalade.
-
On the palate, it has a smooth texture and is described as being soft, persistent, and very well balanced. It has a fresh and energetic acidity with a mineral touch, leading to a lingering finish. The style is medium-dry with high acidity and a high alcohol content of around 19%.
-
The wine is aged in French oak casks for over 10 years using the traditional Canteiro method, a process associated with high-quality wines that involves aging in a warm environment to encourage oxidative development.
-
The wine is bottled ready for drinking and will keep well for several months after opening.

Food Pairing
-
Suggested pairings for the Verdelho style of Madeira include dishes that can stand up to its fresh acidity and complex profile.
-
It is an excellent choice as an aperitif.
-
Specific recommendations include consommé, smoked salmon, dried ham, patés, and spaghetti with clams and orange.
-
It also pairs well with liver pâté, and the acidity allows it to complement fatty meats and rich cheeses.
