White Wit is the flagship Belgian-style wheat ale from Banff Ave Brewing Co., located in the heart of the Banff townsite. As a sister brewery to Jasper Brewing Co., Banff Ave is known for creating approachable, high-quality beers that cater to both international tourists and rugged locals. This Witbier (literally "white beer") is their most popular offering, designed to be an incredibly refreshing, citrus-forward alternative to the heavy stouts and bitter IPAs often found in mountain towns.
Beer Description
White Wit pours a hazy, pale straw-yellow with a thick, moussy white head and a soft, luminous glow—a result of being unfiltered.
Aroma: The nose is bright, spicy, and aromatic. It leads with a dominant scent of sweet orange peel and fresh coriander, followed by a faint, "clove-like" spiciness from the Belgian yeast. You will also find a soft, bready aroma from the large portion of unmalted wheat used in the grain bill.
Palate: On the tongue, it is medium-bodied with a creamy, "fluffy" mouthfeel that feels substantial yet light. It leads with flavors of tangerine and lemon zest, followed by a delicate herbal spiciness. The bitterness is almost non-existent; instead, the beer relies on its high carbonation and a slight "yeasty" tang to provide a clean, refreshing finish.
Profile: It sits at a sessionable 5.0% ABV and a very low 10 IBU, making it the ultimate thirst-quencher.
Technical Notes: This beer follows the traditional Belgian Witbier blueprint. It is brewed with a significant amount of unmalted wheat and oats, which provide the signature cloudiness and silky texture. It is spiced during the boil with bitter orange peel and crushed coriander seeds. A specific Belgian ale yeast is used to produce the subtle spicy and fruity esters that define the style, and the beer is served unfiltered to keep all those complex flavors intact.
