The Balvenie 12 Year Old DoubleWood is a hallmark Speyside single malt Scotch whisky produced at the Balvenie Distillery in Dufftown, Scotland. Founded in 1892 by William J. Grant, the distillery remains independently owned by the family company William Grant & Sons Ltd.. Balvenie is distinguished for maintaining traditional production methods, including growing its own barley, operating its own floor maltings, and employing on-site coopers and coppersmiths. Launched in 1993, the DoubleWood expression was pioneered by Malt Master David C. Stewart and is credited with popularising the 'wood finishing' technique in the whisky industry.
Spirit Description
The spirit gains its name and character from a dual maturation process: it spends at least 12 years in refill American oak ex-bourbon casks before being transferred to first-fill European oak Oloroso sherry butts for a final nine months of finishing. It is then married in large oak vessels known as 'tuns' for three to four months before bottling.
